An academic said former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra appears unlikely to remain politically inactive during his parole period, suggesting he has yet to fully step away from politics but is keeping a low profile until his sentence is completed.

Thaksin has drawn renewed political attention following his release on parole on Monday after serving 243 days of a one-year sentence.

Chulalongkorn University political scientist Stithorn Thananithichot noted Thaksin was seen in high spirits following his release, appearing energetic.

Mr Stithorn predicted his political role could gradually re-emerge through indirect engagement, including informal consultations from home. He added that members of Thaksin's political and family network continue to look to him for influence, maintaining close alignment with his legacy.

"Anyone who thinks he will simply sit still and do nothing but look after his grandchildren is probably mistaken," Mr Stithorn said.

Political activist Jatuporn Prompan took a more critical stance, warning that continued involvement could erode Thaksin's popularity and expose him to legal risks. He also suggested Thaksin's continued engagement could reignite controversy if he is perceived to be exerting influence through proxy channels.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Monday confirmed he is ready to meet Thaksin.

Mr Anutin dismissed speculation that an encounter would heighten political tensions, noting his previous role as a subordinate during Thaksin's time in office.

Following his release from Klongprem Central Prison, Thaksin was fitted with an electronic monitoring (EM) device and informed of his parole conditions.

These include residing at his registered address, reporting to probation officers monthly and seeking permission to travel outside of Bangkok. He is also prohibited from leaving the country.

His movements remain subject to supervision, and he must avoid contact with non-related inmates. Any breach of conditions could result in reconsideration of his parole status.

According to his lawyer, Thaksin will report on May 25, June 27, July 29 and Aug 31, with the parole period expected to conclude on Sept 9.

Thaksin is also expected to undergo a medical check-up at a Bangkok hospital.
